Number of landlines may not be increasing in our country but the penetration of mobile telephony in India is on continue rise. The number of landline user in India stand at 31,43 million as according to the latest data and on the other hand number of mobile subscribers are at 934.09 million. In June month alone, mobile telecom companies adds 4.63 million new mobile phone users. Presently India has a telephone density of 76.99% which means 77 people are using telephones out of every 100 people in India. Now that is definitely a good news for India.

Landline subscriber base decreases from 31.53 million in May to 31.43 million in June. Broadband subscriber base is now at 14.5 million which witness an increase as compared to 14.31 million in the month of May.

But the average broadband speed in India is not changing at all. We are still stuck at the same age old speed of 256 Kbps.

Now those are some serous numbers. But in any case the overall development of economy will take place only when broadband penetration also grows at the same rate as mobile penetration is growing. Also beside penetration, government should also increase the average speed of the broadband connection from 256 Kbps to atleast 2 Mbps asap. The official documents from trai states that by 2015 Indian will enjoy the average broadband speed of 2 Mbps but at this time it just look like a joke to me.

Getting a mobile number costs just 50 Rs. but at the same you have to shell out atleast 500 Rs. for getting a broadband connection. Running cost of broadband is also much greater than recharging mobile phones.

I do agree with your point but it is not feasible in India.
