Recently a thread was started by a user named lumia in this forum which claims that PS3 consumes more electricity than your PS3 even when in idle mode.

First of all i want to say that this information is not true or applicable on present generation of consoles that is PS3 slim. Here are some more interesting details:

PS3 ‘ FAT ‘ (that is the first one)
    Power Supply – 380 Watt
    Die Size – 90 nm
Power Consumption on Standby Mode – 0.36 Watt
Power Consumption on menu – 172 Watt
Power Consumption on playing game – 206 Watt
Power Consumption on playing Blu Ray- 172 Watt

After this different model of PS3 were released with different die size that is after 90 nm it goes to 60 nm and than finally go to 45 nm which is used in PS3 Slim. here are the details of PS3 Slim:

    PS3 ‘ Slim ‘ (Latest PS3)
    Power Supply – 250 Watt
    Die Size – 45 nm
Power Consumption on Standby Mode – 0.36 Watt
Power Consumption on menu – 75 Watt
Power Consumption on playing game – 96 Watt
Power Consumption on playing Blu Ray- 80 Watt

All readings are taken from Wikipedia and CNET experimental test. After reading this you can see that the latest PS3 Slim is definitely consuming much less power than a regular low end desktop even when playing games.
